 SEED STORY (Caballero)_Promo for Slamdance_4As a lone dandelion blossoms in an abandoned parking lot, it divides the lives of several miniature people in this experimental narrative short film by award winning film maker  William D. Caballero.

Filmed in an abandoned parking lot, using a cast of carefully painted tiny model figures this experimental film focuses on the destructive addictions humanity has suffered through the ages.

The film looks at the role of religion, capitalism, environmentalism and fascism through the perspective of macro photography.

Shooting took place over two months in the Summer of 2012, on a budget of less than$3,000. Torches, sparklers and smoke guns were used to create special effects.

Shooting was done close to the ground, during both days of 90 degree heat and heavy rainstorms. The biggest disruption proved to be breezes that at times blew entire sets away.

As of April, 2013, SEED STORY has screened or will screen at numerous film festivals, including a world premiere at the SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL in January, 2013.  The festival had a less than 2% acceptance rate making entry into it more competitive than entry into Harvard!

Rolling Stones Headline at Glastonbury

Glastonbury is a small town in the Mendip district in Somerset, UK:

home to Glastonbury Abbey, one of the most important abbeys in England.

It’s also a town which attracts thousands of people interested in New Age or Pagan beliefs largely because of the myths and legends related to Glastonbury Tor.

These include references to the Holy Grail, King Arthur and Joseph of Arimathea, with some Arthurian literature identifying it as the legendary Island of Avalon.

 

 

Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts 

Internationally Glastonbury is best known as home to the most famous music festival in the world – The Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts which includes dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret and other arts as well as contemporary music.

Festival organiser Michael Eavis is a local farmer who was inspired after seeing the open air Led Zeppelin concert at Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music, 1970 to host an open air festival on the the farm. 14 people invested everything they had to build the stage (many told them the idea would never catch on). The first festival was in 1970 – and the rest as they say, is history.

Rolling Stones Live at Glastonbury 2013

The Rolling Stones  headlined the Pyramid Stage, playing  to a crowd of over 170,000 (not bad for a group that has been around for 50 years).

Their gig started around 9.45 pm at the end of a beautifully sunny day in Somerset with  the crowd waiting in electric anticipation for the most high profile act ever to perform at Glastonbury (having taken 43 years to get there) . 

The Stones played a twenty song set including a version of “Factory Girl” which with specially adapted lyrics became “Glastonbury Girl”

“It was one of the greatest rock and roll sets I’ve ever seen in my life and I think one of the greatest rock and roll sets Glastonbury has ever seen”. “They really just rocked it. The band seemed almost as impressed as the crowd. I guess the audience makes the gig as much as the band.” Telegraph music critic Neil McCormick

What the Posters Say

An interesting article by musician and writer,  Anya Pearson looks at festivals as an annual yardstick of Britain’s musical talent. By taking the much publicised Festival Posters and editing out all acts represented on the posters that do not include at least one female musician, she turns them into a barometer of gender equality in 21st Century Britain. “As a female musician currently in two mixed-gender bands, I have always been painfully aware of my minority status in the music scene.” she says.

Glastonbury was not the worst offender for failing to represent female musicians, probably thanks partly to co-organiser of the event, Emily Eavis, but its poster still only had 34% of the acts that included female musicians.

Pearson concludes:
“Still, festivals alone are not to blame: promoters, managers and record labels all play their part. As a society we are less encouraging of girls who aspire to headline Glastonbury. I was lucky. My mother is a musician who started out in the 70s and always told me my XX chromosome was no barrier to making music.

That said, there are lots of brilliant female musicians out there – as Yoko Ono’s Meltdown at the Southbank Centre proved. Women aren’t passive consumers of popular culture – we just often lack a creative platform to showcase what we can do.”

Vimeo Festival + Awards 2012

The Vimeo Awards celebrate the world’s best videos, and the people who created them. This spectacular visual festival and award ceremony is held in the heart of legendary Chelsea area of New York.

Prizes include $5,000 grants in 13 categories, plus a $25,000 Grand Prize — all to reward creators and help them make new work.

The festival on June 8th and 9th includes talks by speakers which cover the most salient topics in video production today, an area which is explored in even more detail in the many excellent workshops available over the period.

Of course the highlight are the screenings of the videos themselves.

13 Winning videos have been chosen from an original submisson of 14,567 videos – the quality and diversity of imagination in the work is quite phenomemal.

    Not succeeding plays a hugely important role in the creative process.   • World Premiere of ‘Limbo,’ the New Film by 2010 Grand Prize Winner Eliot Rausch

    At the 2010 Festival + Awards, Eliot Rausch took home top honors for his touching film “Last Minutes with Oden.” During this profile, Eliot will tell us how winning the Grand Prize changed his life and what he’s been up to since. The session includes the world premiere of Eliot’s new film, “Limbo,” which he made with his 2010 prize money, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at how the Limbo came to life.

 Putting the Fun in Funding
  • When it comes to obtaining a decent budget for your project, you are no longer reduced to groveling at the feet of rich friends. This session looks at three more dignified ways to find funding: through grant organizations, crowd-sourcing, and brands that want to catalyze great content. Kickstarter’s Art Program Director Stephanie Pereira, The Creators Project’s Global General Manager Hosi Simon, and Adella Ladjevardi, Grants Manager at funding body Cinereach, will tell us how they work, what they’re looking for in projects, and what you need to know when approaching them.

    With high-quality camera equipment now widely accessible, almost anyone can shoot videos that look good. But pretty pictures get you only so far — the way to truly captivate viewers is by telling a story that grips from the get-go and hangs on well after the final frame. And while we can feel that stories are powerful, there’s science behind them, too. Jonathan Gottschall, author of The Storytelling Animal: How Stories Make Us Human, draws on the latest research in neuroscience, psychology, and biology to argue that storytelling has evolved to ensure our species’ survival. With insight on the basic human impulses behind tragedies, comedies, and cliffhangers, this session is a must for anyone who wants to tell a story that hits audiences in the heart, the gut, and other important organs.

    Executing big ideas can require big technology, and the most forward-looking filmmakers are inventing their own to bring groundbreaking concepts to life.
